Ornek Art Classes — A Space Where Creativity Meets Heritage
How culture and traditional symbols help us rediscover inner balance and strength
The Crimean Tatar ornament Ornek is a symbolic system in which every element carries its own meaning and sense. By understanding the “language” of the ornament, one can create a unique composition — a kind of personal program for the future. This approach lies at the heart of the art classes that the NGO Alem has been conducting for children and adults for over six years. By creating their own ornaments, participants restore inner order and hope, while intangible cultural heritage becomes a source of support and renewal.
In October 2022, Alem, in partnership with the Treasury of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, presented the exhibition “Miras. Heritage.”
Following the concept of James Clifford, the artifacts were displayed not merely as historical objects but as part of continuous living practices that shape social values, foster inclusion and dialogue, and serve as a kind of “contact zone” — a welcoming space of trust and connection.
